There’s always something written on the walls around Bangalore…more often than not it’s ‘Do not urinate here’, but yesterday I spotted the most beautiful artwork adorning the entire length of the wall around the RBANMS grounds (which is about a Kilometre long!) in Ulsoor, and it just blew me away!
Wall Call is one of a number of contemporary art projects being run by Srishti School of Art, Design and Technology for their Interim Semester "to nurture emerging creative talent through experimentation and collaboration. It is an open ended framework for learning through engagement with artistic practice. It connects with the creative processes of researching, reproducing, documenting, collecting, intervening, collaborating, experimenting, producing and presenting. The projects are created with an emphasis on socially engaging and context led art and design, leading the student beyond the campus and classroom and into public realm."
This Street art is more than just pretty pictures and beautiful patterns; it depicts life in Ulsoor and highlights some of the issues faced by the locals. It compels us to reflect on our actions and consider the impact they have on our environment.
My favourite part of the wall is the beautiful VCUP mural (We See You Pee). It address Bangalore’s problem with public urination. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve witnessed men urinating in public! It’s disgusting!! But sadly, it’s so common that I’m no longer shocked when I see it.
I also love this section depicting the street animals feeding on Ulsoors rubbish:
If you live in Bangalore you HAVE to see these!
Start here:
Snap the painted map with your phone, and walk the 1kmish of adorned walls. It’s beautiful and really thought provoking.
I'd love to know what you think!
