Have you seen the images of the frozen Niagara Falls recently? Well, the Falls are only about a 4 hour drive from us in Pittsburgh, so on Friday night we made a last minute decision to see them that weekend - the weather was supposed to be warming up the following week and we knew we'd kick ourselves if we missed the opportunity to see such a rare spectacle!
We already had plans on the Saturday so our only chance to see the frozen falls was to head up Saturday night and see them on the Sunday. It was a pretty short trip, but wow, it was worth it. It was breathtakingly beautiful!
WHERE WE STAYED
We drove to Erie Saturday night and then drove the rest of the way first thing Sunday. We stayed in a cozy, cute little cottage in Erie with a wood burning stove in the bedroom (!!) that we rented through Airbnb. We’ve been using Airbnb a lot recently, not only do the prices tend to be lower than most hotels, but the experience is SO much better too. I think you get a much better feel for a city when you’re staying with locals than when you stay in a chain hotel.
FAVOURITE PLACES TO EAT AND DRINK
After we'd seen the falls we headed to Niagra on the Lake, a cute little town with a high-street lined with little boutiques and cafes.
We had lunch at Treadwell, Farm to Table cuisine and I have to say the food was FANTASTIC and such a great price too!
FAVOURITE THINGS TO DO
View the falls from the Skylon tower on the Canadian side
Walk around Niagara on the Lake, Canada
Watch the sun set over the falls from the Niagara Falls state park on the American side
WHAT I WORE
Well to say it was cold, is an understatement. I wore all my warmest layers, wrapped up in my blanket scarf and stomped around in my Sorrels!

Wow, it looks sooo beautiful! I visited here in 2007 and had so much fun in Buffalo. I'd love to go back someday!

The pictures are AMAZING. Especially the first one!
ReplyDeleteWow! I had no idea such a large body of water could freeze – that first picture is amazing :) I know what you mean about making the most of opportunities to travel and explore – we went to LA for the weekend last week which took about the same about of time it would to drive from Bristol to London, madness! x
ReplyDeleteMe neither! I couldn't believe it!! Hope you liked LA, we visited over 10 years ago and I'd love to go back! Hubby keeps travelling to San Fran and LA for work...am very tempted to join him for some of his trips :)
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
ReplyDeleteBuffalo's not too far from us, maybe we should go visit if you had so much fun there! You'll have to give us some tips on what to do there
ReplyDeleteLA was good but so hot! You should definitely join him – especially if it involves a trip to SF :) x
