Ask Niki // Summer Workwear

I was tweeting about my lookbooks at the beginning of the week and Hayley got in touch asking for some tips on suitable work wear for the ridiculously hot weather you’re all enjoying in the UK.  We rarely get blistering hot sunshine in the UK, so when we actually do it can take a little adjusting to!

When the weather’s gorgeous and the sun’s shining, it can be difficult not to head to work looking like you’re off for the weekend. So, how do you pull together a look that’s both comfortable in the warm and stuffy office, but that keeps you looking and feeling cool? More importantly how do you stay fresh in the heat and ensure you’re still taken seriously?   Flip flops and short shorts just won't cut it.

The most comfortable clothing to wear in the heat is lightweight, breathable fabrics such as cotton, silk and linen (although linen can look really creased in a matter of minutes unless mixed with Viscose).  Loose styles are great, however these can look a little untidy for the office so it’s important to choose shapes that have a little structure, or styles that you can accessorise and style-up into something smarter. Belts are my go to accessory; they’re the perfect way to finish an outfit and make it look little more polished.

Sleeveless tops are fine for the office, but try to avoid going for anything too strappy.  And if you do go sleeveless, then avoid anything that's low cut; keep this for your days off.

Skirts are a cool option in the heat teamed with loose tops, but make sure you tuck the top in for a smarter look and beware of going for anything too short.

Light weight fabrics can often be a little see through, a simple way to solve this for the office is to wear a camisole underneath but when it’s hot, this just isn’t an option.  Instead, wear a nude/skin coloured bra underneath so it can’t be seen.  DON’T be tempted to wear a white bra with it, white will be just as obvious as black!

If you’re going to wear sandals to the office, then opt for a smart, non-beachy pair and make sure your toe nails are painted.
